Remove restrictions on Taiwan-mainland China shipping services, says Evergreen Chairman

EXISTING restrictions on cross-strait services between Taiwan and mainland China need to be repealed the unnecessary cost burdens on shipping lines, Evergreen Marine chairman, Mr Wang Long-Shung said in a recent address to the shipping industry in Dalian.
In 1949 all direct shipping links between Taiwan and the mainland were cut, as a result of the Chinese civil war which resulted in the establishing of the People's Republic of China.
These restrictions remain in place today despite the rapid growth in bilateral trade, which amounted to US$86 billion in 2007.
